Your Mission, If You Choose To Accept It...

March 20, 2016

Catalyst Arts Atlanta's mission is to produce multidisciplinary artistic collaborations which connect Atlanta’s artistic and civic voices.

That's a short sentence full of big words and even bigger goals. We very recently changed our mission statement and thought we would let you know why. In case you haven't noticed, Catalyst is not a lofty organization full of mysterious teams of robots. We are a small group of real humans, building something we believe in, in the city that we love. We want to share our adventure with you in all of it's messy, wonderful, ever evolving stages.

What is a mission statement anyways?

The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a path, and guide decision-making.

Why change it?

Our first mission statment reads as follows:Catalyst develops artistic works that spark moments of discovery, community dialogue, and collective action
Creates provocative theatrical productions that both challenge and connect audiences
Builds relationships with other theatrical, performative, or artistic entities
Provides opportunities for show-specific outreach, directly impacting human lives in the Atlanta community
Opens up a safe space for artists and audiences, exploring stories that are at once familiar and strange
Builds in-roads for empathy

We discovered our mission statement was not actionable, measurable and was simply too wordy. We began the process of editing by putting our mission into our own words. It wasn't much of a surprise to look at each of our individual mission ideas and find similar themes of cross collaboration in between artists, social and civic responsibilities and a commitment to high quality work.

After hours of discussion, collaboration and some completely wacky first drafts we came to the mission statement you see today. A single sentence we believe is a standard to hold our work against.

Our mission is to produce multidisciplinary artistic collaborations which connect Atlanta’s artistic and civic voices.

That's it, short simple and to the point.
